Giardiasis

Giardiasis is an infection of the small intestines by Giardia lamblia. It is one of the most common causes of diarrhea all over the world. The bacteria spreads through water contaminated by human and animal wastes containing it.

Treatment

Giardiasis is an infection of the intestines (gut). It is caused by a microscopic parasite known as Giardia lamblia which is found in faeces.



Some people recover without any treatment. In others the infection can last for weeks or even months.



It is treated with antibiotics, usually metronidazole.Pills given 3 times a day for 5 days.



Treatment with quinacrine is 90% effective with these pills given over 5 days.



Nitazoxanide is approved for use in children with giardiasis. It is available in liquid form and must be taken with food.



Giardiasis can be prevented by following good hygiene practices.
