Mitral Valve Regurgitation and Mitral Valve Replacement

Mitral valve regurgitation happens when the mitral valve, which controls blood flow between the left atrium and the left ventricle within the heart, does not close properly. This allows blood to flow back within the heart, and the heart is not able to pump blood to the body as efficiently.
