Anosmia / Loss Of Smell

Anosmia, or the loss of the sense of smell, might happen as a result of injury, infection, or genetics. It is more dangerous than people generally imagine – an anosmic person might not be able to smell gas leaks, for example, or bad food.

Hi there! I lost my sense of smell about 3 years ago following a bad cold/sinusitis and my doctor implied I was stuck with the condition and did not show much interest in treatment options. It was a real drag as it affected my appreciation of food and I was conscious there might be odours in my house I was unaware of eg dead rats the cats sometimes bring in!! I tried a lozenge product sold in NZ which contains a probiotic called Streptococcus salivarius Blis K12. This was developed at Otago Medical School Microbiology dept in NZ as a treatment for protection from oral, nasal and throat infections [a bonus is that it acts to prevents bad breath]. It has been available in NZ for about 10 years and has an excellent safety record. After several months of taking one lozenge daily my sense of smell (and taste) has come back even better than it was before. I understand K12 lozenges and gum are now sold in the USA, so you will need to google Blis K12 if you decide to give it a try.

Bruce3 - are you still using this product? Does it have any side effects? I lost my sense of smell due to a virus over a year ago and will try anything. Thanks!

I have never been able to smell, at least that I can remember. I am 33 years old now and never really thought much of it. Some friends said it could be fixed so I was doing some research and came across this site. I guess I don't know what I'm missing but it might be nice to smell??

My husband lost his sence of smell about 14 yrs ago when a co-worker came to work with a really strange sinus infection,my husband thinks he got the same infection from this man, because he came down with the same kind of sinus infection, after the infection was gone he notice that he could not smell after that and has not since, but the weirdest thing ever once in while he thinks he smells strong chemcials[like bleach or ammonia.]

I was born without a sense of smell and I can "smell" bleach and ammonia and sometimes peppermint. Its not actually a smell though, its just the sensation of tiny particles touching the skin inside his nose. I always say that if you can feel it on your skin I can probably smell it.

Same here!!! I don't ever remember smelling anything. But bleach or ammonia or a lot of perfume really bothers my nose. I can tell when its in the room. Don't think that qualifies as a smell though. I'm 38 yrs old.

Hi, I'm 27 years old, and have never been able to smell for as long as I can remember. It took me a long time to figure out that I didn't even know what smelling felt like. I had a CT scan done to see if there were blockages, but there were none, so they said that they can't fix it in that case. It's nice to be able to see that I'm not alone with this. It sure is challenging sometimes. It has put me in dangerous situations often [fuel leaks, eating rotten food that still looks okay to eat, gas stove not turned on properly and releasing gas, not being able to detect/recognize dangerous chemicals...] but another disadvantage has been the embarrassing moments that can come to people who cannot smell. Here's one example that happened when I was in high school: I had forgotten a banana in a small pocket in my backpack, and for a week I was walking around with an awful smell following me around! The banana was total brown mush when my best friend recognized that that awful smell she'd been noticing that week was coming from my textbook. I just had no clue. To the best of my knowledge, smell is a dimension that doesn't even exist. Anyways... I have many many stories that are funny/scary. But I do wish I could smell. For many reasons that are too numerous to list. It sure is different world for us.

I'm exactly the same as you guys. I don't remember ever smelling anything and have no idea what the cause is. I've never really missed it as I never had it and it's just been a good source of discussion/humour [some friends once took great pleasure in convincing me you can smell the colour blue] Recently I've been looking into it more and more after urgings from an old girlfriend and I must convince I'm hugely curious as to what it's all about. I want to smell bacon and donuts and wet dogs. I even want to smell the rubbish smells. If anyone has any success stories with this sort of situation I'd love to hear about them. Cheers, Dave

Hi, I'm fifteen and have neverbeen able to smell. I'm like you guys and don't actually know what smelling is/like. I was 10 when I found our. I had an MRI and it turned out that the nerve in the top of my nose was so small and undeveloped that I cannot smell. I sometimes wish I could smell. But I also feel kinda special that I can't!
